Legal Services Available Through HALP
Legal issues are handled most quickly with a referral from a case manager at an HIV services agency. Upon referral from a client's case manager, HALP advises and refers clients with HIV/AIDS who need assistance with legal issues such as:
- Estate planning/wills
- Bankruptcy
- Consumer/contracts
- Debt collection
- Social Security benefits
- Discrimination
- Employment issues
- Insurance
- Real estate
- Landlord/tenant
- Domestic relations
- Worker's compensation
- Trusts
- Medical malpractice
- Confidentiality
- AHCCCS
HALP does not handle criminal cases, although it can refer clients to lawyers who can take their cases. Civil matters for low-income clients are handled through our Volunteer Lawyers Program. We also offer brief service and advice, and referrals to private attorneys.
Other services include:
- Homebound/hospital visits for clients unable to travel
- Information, advice and referrals available to people affected by HIV/AIDS
- Free notary service to clients
- Community legal education presentations
HALP serves Maricopa and Pinal counties. Ms. Stuart is a paralegal, not an attorney.
